This study sought to explore the applicability of collective action theories in a typical Zimbabwean communal setting. For purposes of this study, the following four attributes of collective action prominent in literature, were examined: organisation, mobilisation, interest and opportunity. The attributes of collective action, as defined in literature, are examined using empirical examples from Chishawasha Communal Area. This study attempted to understand some of the issues associated with collective action, largely viewed to be important for successful implementation of social development projects.Collective Action is common in engagements perceived by community members as being beneficial to them.
Groups rely upon the actions of persons to sustain their existence, but to what extent is the agency of the group depend upon the persons themselves? That is to say, to what extent can groups of persons be said to act in ways that cannot be descriptively reduced to the actions of the set of its members? How we understand collectives to act, and how we understand their possibilities for action, is connected to two related yet divergent sets of principles. First, our concept of collective action is dependent upon the metaphysical ideas underlying our conceptualization of groups, their capacity for reasoning, and their possibility to form intentions as reasons for action. Second, our understanding of collective action undergirds how the law treats collective behavior, how we think about individual and collective responsibility, and how models in disciplines such as economics, political science, and management theory explain and predict collective behavior. This project brings the two into conversation, and argues for the possibility that some groups, given the proper structural constraints, could have the capacity to be moral agents.

Infrastructural facilities are necessary incentives for, and prerequisites of development, good quality of life and community cohesion. Whereas the majority of Nigerians live in rural areas, the rural dwellers have no voice in decision making on matters that concerned their lives. Consequently, the rural area is characterised by low accessibility, high degree of socio-economic and infrastructural deprivation that accelerate urbanisation. This infrastructural deprivation occasioned by official inadequacy in the rural sector gives rooms for rural populace to adopt collective action to solve problems of daily life. Thus, this book brings to the fore, through empirical analysis, how people in rural areas collectively respond to the problem of infrastructural deprivation through shared strategies and problem-solving interdependencies, relying on the principles of equity, fairness and mutual behavioural expectations they derive from their tradition. In order to overcome the problem of infrastructural deprivation, problem-solving models that are anchored on collective action, associational life, mutual trust, reciprocity, and common understanding are proposed for adoption.
